Refresh Projects
Refresh projects that make dated rooms feel current
A refresh is not a gut renovation. It is a focused set of changes, usually paint, lighting, hardware, and storage, that changes how a room looks and works without moving walls.
Start with a room walkthrough
Stand in the doorway and list what bothers you. Most dated rooms share a few culprits: tired wall color, yellowed light fixtures, mismatched hardware, and clutter with no home.
- Note the light: which direction windows face and when the room is used.
- Photograph each wall so you can compare before and after.
- Separate cosmetic issues from repairs that need attention first.
Paint does the heavy lifting
A new wall and trim color is usually the single most noticeable change per dollar. Test large samples on two walls and look at them morning and evening before deciding.
- Eggshell or matte for walls, satin or semi-gloss for trim and doors.
- Patch nail holes and sand glossy surfaces before priming.
- Ceilings in a flat finish hide small imperfections.
Fixtures and hardware tie it together
Swapping cabinet pulls, door levers, faucets, and light fixtures in one consistent finish makes a room look intentional. Count every piece before buying so finishes match.
Give storage a job
Closet systems, shelf risers, and labeled bins keep the refreshed look from fading. Plan storage around what you actually own, not an idealized version.
